Freeman High School is the district’s 10th high school and thinks beyond the traditional. And that starts with the three-story, L-shaped design, which reflects an emphasis on student-driven learning and real-world connections. A "learning green" connecting Freeman High School to Nelson Junior High is one of many unique features that you'll discover when you visit for the first time. And three sets of "learning stairs" provide spaces for students and teachers to gather for collaborative learning, arts performances and other activities.
The school name honors the Freeman family, which has a 125-year history spanning six generations in Katy. In fact, Elyson’s name was inspired by Ely Freeman, who arrived in the Katy area with his family in 1898.
The “Golden Eagles” are led by principal Gina Cobb. Cobb has been a part of the Katy ISD family since 1999 when she began her career in public education and has taught, coached, and held several administrative titles at various junior high and high schools in Katy ISD including grade-level assistant principal, administrative assistant principal, student support assistant principal, associate principal, and principal. In opening Freeman High School in 2024, Cobb says “I am so excited to start this next chapter and to partner with the students, parents and staff of Katy ISD’s newest high school. Together we will establish a community of excellence for years to come. We will build something special.”
Freeman offers a well-rounded curriculum that acknowledges the importance of arts and athletics. Art classrooms have access to outdoor studio areas, and a 900-seat performing arts center sets the stage for performances. Students have the opportunity to participate in 16 sports—including swimming in the onsite natatorium. And then there's the technology. Filtered WiFi is present in each classroom and every student receives their own Chromebook to use for the school year. Each classroom also has a 55-inch smart panel computer, allowing students and teachers to conduct research and share presentations with the entire class.
