“We want to raise our kids and grow old at Elyson,” says dad Sterling Cooper

Until the Cooper family moved to Elyson this year, they drove through almost every day, because their youngest children attended Katy ISD’s McElwain Elementary in the community.

“I felt like a kid in a candy store driving through Elyson, except I couldn’t get any of the candy,” said Sterling Cooper, a father of three, with number four on the way. “We lived in another neighborhood just down the street, and ever since we moved there, we longed for all the amenities and activities we saw in Elyson.”

This spring, the Coopers made their dream come true by moving into their new home in Elyson, within walking distance of the new Lakeside Landing community center.

Their new life has been everything the family dreamed of.

“Brittany and I both feel like Elyson is the community where we want to raise our kids and grow old. We wish we had moved here in the first place, and we’re very happy to be here now,” Sterling said.

The family has also been happy with their builder, Perry Homes. “I never imagined us living in a one-story home, but our plan is so open and spacious, it’s perfect,” Sterling said. “The build quality was excellent, and any time we’ve had any small issues come up, Perry has very nice and responsive.”

Some of the family’s favorite Elyson events so far have been Movies in the Park and Tails & Ales, which gave them a chance to introduce their new Maltipoo puppy to neighbors.

Elyson’s special events are created by our Director of Community Engagement, Nicole Harris.

“Having a staff member dedicated to planning resident events makes a huge difference. Our previous community didn’t have such a person, so I kind of took on that role myself,” said Sterling.

While Sterling can now leave the event planning to Elyson, he still loves to throw a party. In late October, the Coopers held a Halloween-themed baby shower, complete with costumes and a caricature artist. About 80 people attended, mostly the family’s new neighbors.

In the past, Sterling has put on neighborhood events with ponies, trains, petting zoos and other star attractions, and he plans to someday soon have a camel.

“I’ve always had a passion for throwing fun events,” he said. “Now that I’m a father, I’m even more passionate. I don’t want my kids to miss out on anything.”

Originally from Chicago, Sterling lived all over the country for his career with a railroad company. He was recently promoted to director of engineering, enabling him to choose to live anywhere in the Houston area.

“Living in so many places gave us the opportunity to decide what kind of community we wanted to live in,” he said. “We chose Katy because it is so family oriented and the schools are excellent.”

The family’s two youngest children now attend Elyson’s newest school, Youngblood Elementary, which recently opened.

Along with events, the Coopers have enjoyed Elyson’s amenities since moving in. “We’re an outdoor type of family, and we love getting on our bikes and exploring all the trails and parks at Elyson,” he said.
