Freeman High, Boudny Elementary and More: Meet the Schools Inside Elyson

For families with kids, schools are usually one of the first things to look into when moving to a new community. And in Elyson? That conversation comes up fast.

Several schools are right here inside the community, so getting to class doesn’t necessarily mean sitting in traffic or driving across Katy every morning. Depending on where you live, your kids may be able to walk or bike to school, too.

Here’s a closer look at the schools in Elyson, how the different campuses fit into the community, and one important detail to keep in mind when you’re looking at homes.

Why schools are such a big part of the Elyson conversation

When you're buying a home with kids, you're choosing more than just the house. You’re also thinking about where they’ll go to school, how they’ll get there, and what a normal Tuesday will look like.

That’s one of the things that stands out about Elyson. Several Katy ISD schools are located right here in the community, which makes everyday life a little easier for parents. School drop-off is closer to home, kids have the option to walk or bike in some neighborhoods, and after-school activities don’t always require another long drive across town. As they get older, it also gives them more room to get around on their own.

Katy ISD has a pretty strong reputation to go along with that convenience too, being named the #1 school district in the Houston area for the fifth consecutive year, with an overall A+ rating in 2025.

The elementary campuses

Elyson has Katy ISD elementary campuses located within the community: David and Terri Youngblood Elementary, McElwain Elementary and Boudny Elementary.

McElwain Elementary is another neighborhood campus, and like the others it has an active parent community that shows up for the things elementary schools run on, like book fairs, field day, the fall carnival, etc.

Boudny Elementary, which opened in 2025, is a new addition to the community and rounds out the elementary schools located inside Elyson.

If you have elementary-age children, having multiple campuses in the community is a pretty convenient setup. Instead of building your routine around a school that's several miles away, the school day is much closer to home.

Nelson Junior High

Once students move on from elementary school, Nelson Junior High is the next stop for many Elyson families. The campus is also located on-site, so students don’t have to go far once they make the jump to junior high.

This is especially nice during these independent years. They can stay after school for a club, meet up with friends, or head to practice. (No ride showing up at exactly the right minute.)

Freeman High School

Freeman High School is located right in Elyson and is the campus many families associate with the community. As of this school year, every address in Elyson is zoned to Freeman.

High school is where a community either feels connected or it doesn’t. At Elyson, school activities, sports and other events all happen right here, and students often graduate with some of the same kids they grew up with in the neighborhood.

Everything feels easier when the school and the neighborhood share the same streets.

There’s an on-site charter option too

Elyson also has a charter school inside the community. Harmony School of Excellence in Katy brings a K-12 STEM-focused program to residents who want that emphasis. (And because it is a public charter, there’s no tuition.)

Unlike a Katy ISD school, enrollment at Harmony isn't based on your home address. Families apply directly through Harmony, and admission is handled through its application and lottery process.

If you're considering Harmony for your child, it's a good idea to look into the enrollment process early since the application timeline is different from the district schools.

One thing worth checking, your school zoning

This is probably the most important thing to know if schools are a major factor in your home search. Elyson is primarily served by Katy ISD, but some portions of the community fall within Cy-Fair ISD. Homes west of Peek Road attend Katy ISD, and homes east of Peek Road attend Cy-Fair ISD. Both districts are highly regarded, but what matters is that zoning is assigned by the school district based on your exact address, and could possibly change as the community continues to grow.

So if a specific campus is driving your decision, use the map key or check the district map to confirm the assignment for the home site you’re interested in. Our teams also keep track of what is what across the community so feel free to ask us when you visit, or explore the available homes at Elyson and bring the addresses you like best.

Come see Elyson for yourself

It’s definitely worth seeing Elyson during the school week. You'll get a better feel for the community when kids are biking home, parents are chatting in the pickup line, and the neighborhood is actually going through its normal routine.

Stop by the Welcome Center while you're here too. Our team can help you look at the homesites you're considering and point you toward the schools assigned to each one.

Here's to a school year that starts a short walk from your front door.
